Renovation and compliance of the Charlemagne Ice Rink – Lyon

Environmental qualities of the project:
-The city of Lyon wanted to put this equipment in compliance with regulations: fire, electrical, acoustical and accessibility for disabled people to enhance its attractiveness for schools, sports and the general public.
-The entire building envelope (roof, glass facades, metal siding, etc …) has also been replaced to improve the energetic efficiency and comfort.
-The acoustical nuisance towards residents were treated by the replacement of exterior woodworks and the fitting of special glass also characterized by excellent solar factor.
-The compressor cooling system for the ice rink has been improved: the existing water cooling system, which previously warmed and deteriorated the water table, was replaced by an air cooling system.
-A new ventilation system was installed with dehumidification to optimize the energetic management of the equipment.

The Charlemagne ice rink was built in 1967 by the architects BATTON & ROUSTIT and had had no major renovation since then,
-The building envelope (roof and glass walls) has been completely dismantled and replaced by a new envelope with outstanding thermal and acoustic performance. The external structure has been totally changed in accordance with the acoustical criteria
-The legal change for Snow and Wind regulation since 1967 imposed the strengthening of the structure before reinstalling the new cover,
-The hall is renovated, administrative offices expanded, accessibility for reduced-mobility persons implemeted,
-The purity of the original architecture is recovered and valorized in particular through the removal of an awning, added subsequently, and moving the access for customers of general public skating to the Charlemagne entry
-A blue Batyline “canvas” ceiling transposes the overhead lighting discarded for improved acoustics
-The system of production of cold in the ice rink has been improved; and dehumidification was performed in the whole building,
-The surrounding area has also undergone a total redevelopment in the continuity of public facilities defined by the mission Lyon Confluence,
-The schedule was rigorously managed (implementation by the architect) to take advantage of the off-season (late April 2006 to mid-September 2006) to complete the works and be able to reset the ice at this date.
